Mathspig Tennis Pro

Hellooooooooo Darlings,

Mathspig is going to the Aussie Open Tennis Semi-finals tonight.

Some quick maths.

Men’s and Women’s Singles Prize Money;

Win; $3,100,000

Runner UP: $1,550,00

It cost me … ARGGHHHH! … $Aus250 a ticket. If they play for the average game time of a Grand Slam match of 1 1/2 hrs it will costing me $2.78 a minute or 1 1/2 cappuccinos a minute.

If the game goes for 3 hrs (more common in finals) it will be costing me $1.39 a minute, but the winner gets $650,000 for playing in a semi-final and that means they earn – for 3 hrs – $7,222 a minute. Now that is a lot of cappuccinos.

Of course, tennis stars need maths … to count all that loot!!!!!!!

Mathspig hogmobile 2

Hello Babies,

Randall MunroeRandall Munroe is a pro web cartoonist, maths nut and maths guru who answers crazy hypothetical questions using maths. His website is xkcd.

His TED lecture is here.

……………………………………………………………………..

Munroe_WHAT_IF_hi-591x768_mediumAnd his book What if? Can be found here.

Here are some of the questions Randall attacks:

When, if ever, will Facebook contain more profiles of dead people than of living ones?

Ans: It could be as early as 2065.

Could you get drunk from drinking a drunk person’s blood?

Ans: Not to be recommended.

At what speed would you have to drive for rain to shatter your windshield?

Ans: Mach 1 or really, really, fast.

……………………………………………………………………………………………..

Mathspig loves this crazy maths. Here are some of the hypothetical questions from mathspig:

Can you kill your teacher with chocolate!

Can you outrun a zombie?

In the REAPING in The Hunger Games Maths what is the chance that a brother and sister are both selected as tributes?

In The TWILIGHT series Edward is an ethical vampire (He only consumes animal blood), but how many Shih tzus would he need a day to stay alive?

Mass Murderer or Maths Teacher?

Don’t forget the Baa Graph Ha! Ha!

baa-graph-1

……………………………………………………………………..

And now Mathspig has been cruising in her Hogmobile working out how far a car can travel on human fat. You will find interesting calculations here, here and here.

Ooooooh! I’ve got the munchies. I better go and make some more DIY bio-fuel.

Mathspig Outdoor Activities

Hellooooooooo My Little Wallaroos,

Mathspig has been reading The Last Child in the Woods by Richard Louv.  He describes school today as a form of ‘passive incarceration’. Too many children live their life indoors exposed to the ‘one-way experience of television and other electronic media’. Many rarely, or never, experience nature or just digging for worms in the garden. And sometimes nature is just around the corner.

Mathspig lives 10 km from the CBD in Melbourne, Australia. Aussies often joke about riding kangaroos to school or warn of Drop Bears (Koalas that kill tourists dropping from trees). It’s our Aussie sense of humour. Those jokes almost seemed real when these kangaroos turned up by the Yarra river below Mathspig’s house recently. They’re wild roos. I saw them at 9am one Sunday looking at all the joggers, dog-walkers and cyclists on the nearby bike track. They didn’t seem worried. Awesome. Or, maybe, roo-some.

Kangaroo 1

So outdoors we go, mathpiggeies, to embrace nature and have some grand maths adventures:

Outdoor Maths Adventures: Grade 3 – 5

Outdoor Maths Adventures: Middle School

And don’t forget some Geometry Jokes.

Other outdoor maths adventures on this blog:

The shop is 50 Smoots on your left

Why not invent a new unit of length, make a string in, say, Smoots, and go outside and measure parts of the school.

Twilight Maths II: Will Vampires rule the world?

January 29, 2010

In Stephanie Meyer’s the Twilight series there are good Vampires and Bad Vampires. Edward Cullen and the other Vampires in the Cullen Covern are ethical Vampires. (See earlier post: Fang it to me! : Twilight Maths) The only eat animal blood. Edward falls in love with Bella a human. The baddie Vampires are James, Laurent (pictured) and Victoria.

Twilight Vampires, as with all vampires, can turn a human into a vampire by biting them. IN the Twilight mythology a vampire injects a venom into their victim and, depending on how much venom is injected the victim will turn into vampire in 3 – 5 days.

Vampires who drink human blood have red eyes. So freshly made vampires have bright red eyes due to the human blood already in their veins. Vampires who drink animal blood have yellow eyes.

How long would it take one Vampire, say James, to turn the whole population of the earth into vampires? We can work it out, mathspigs.

On the first night James goes out and bites a human. Now there are two vampires. Each night the vampires go out their numbers double.

……

These calculations were updated for clarity on 21 OCT 2011 after I’d worked on my JUDE LAW CAN’T DO MATHS post. Now in the Twilight Series it takes 3 days for a  human to turn into a vampire. So we will assume that James and his rapidly growing covern go out every 3rd night to feast on human blood.

How many days will it take one bad Twilight vampire to take over the world (Population 6.8 Billion. See World Population Clock US Census Bureau ) ? You work it out. But here is a hint.

I suspect the Cullen Family are smart vampires because they only drink animal blood.
Unless, animals also turn into vampires and we are over run by vampire squirrels, vampire poodles, vampire canaries and more.

Fang It to Me: Twilight Maths

November 24, 2009

Twilight, Stephanie Meyers vampire- romance book and film series, is a world phenomenon. Seventeen year old HIgh School student, Isabella “Bella” Swan, falls in love with Edward Cullen (Left), a vampire. But the Cullen family are ethical vampires. Though attracted to human blood; they live on the ethical alternative of animal blood. So here is the question mathspigs:

‘How much animal blood does a young male Vampire need to survive?

First we’ll collect some data. We’ll assume Edward needs the same daily intake of calories as a young human male. According to the Free Library Online article, Best Food for Young Athletes, young males between 14 – 18 years of age need 3,200 Calories per day. We’ll assume Edward needs 3,000 Calories a day.

 How many Calories in Blood?

 The Mayoclinic explains that 1 pint of human blood contains 650 Calories. So if you donate a pint of blood you lose 650 calories. Blood donation is not, however, a desirable weight loss program. If Edward drank human blood he would need

3,000/ 650 =  4.6 pints a day.

Note: There is great confusion on the Web about calories as the upper case ‘C’ stands for kilo in USA and is often ignored:

1 Calorie = 1 kilocalorie = 1,000 calories

 But Edward has a taste for Mountain Lions (Below).  How many Mountain Lions would he need to suck on a day??????? Dr Carlisle Cullen (Right), on the other hand, prefers deer. While Emmett Cullen has a taste for the blood of Gizzly Bears(Below). As Edward, Carlisle and Emmett cannot always sink their fangs into their favourite furry food here  is some information about a range of possible Vampire Snacks.

Mountain Lion

Weight Range 75 – 275 lbs = 34 – 125 kg

Mid range Weight = 80kg

Gizzly Bear  Male

Weight Range = 180 – 360 kg

Mid range weight = 170kg

 Deer

Weight Range = 100 – 350 lbs = 45 -160 kg

Mid range weight approx = 100 kg

Barn Owl

Weight = 0.45 kg

Cow

Weight Range = 1,500 lbs = approx 680 kg

Mid range weight approx = 100 kg

Shih Tzu

Weight Range = 9 – 16 lb = 4 – 7.2 kg

mid weight = approx 5.5 kg

Fat Cat

Weight = 18 lbs = 8 kg

Koala

Weight range = 7.5 – 11 kg

Mid range weight = approx 9 kg

Note: In the following calculations we will use a mid range weight for each animal snack and assume Edward can suck out it’s entire blood supply.  So Edward can empty an ocelot or koala (He might visit Australia one day and he’d be hungry!!!!) The weight of blood (Bwt)in an animal is 7% of the Animal’s Body Weight (Awt). This information comes from Animal Physiology Maths Questions. . Keep in mind if the answer is less than 1 the snack will last Edward several days. You can work out how many…… think about it.

Ocelot

Weight = 10.5 kg

Coyote

Weight = 12.7 kg

Alright Mathspig will tell you the typical weight of a pig with great reluctance. It is 110kg. But just to wet your appetite here is a little Vampire Snack I prepared earlier.

Edward would need to consume 13 Chihuahuas a day.

Run, Tinkerbelle, run!!! (That’s Paris Hilton’s dog)
