Get Ready for the Lego Olympics

February 23, 2012

Get ready mathspigs. You need one Lego Man, Girl, Vampire or Alien each for this exercise. Now we are going to set out the Lego Olympics Athletics track.

……………………….

But this story of the Olympics begins with Carl Lewis, one of the greatest athletes of all time who won 9 Olympic Gold medals in 100m, 200m, relay and long jump.

Carl Lewis

Mathspig needs to find out how big the Lego Olympics track would be. How? Easy.

Carl Lewis will be our standard Lego Man.

I chose Carl Lewis because he kindly gave me his autograph once when I sprinted in high heels across a ballroom floor at a sports dinner in Melbourne and beat all other journalists.  It was my personal best in high heels, I think.

…………….

Lego Olympics to Scale2016……….

………

This means everything at the Lego Olympics  will be

1:50

of the real Olympics.

.

.

.

.

.

.

.

.

.

The  Lego Bird’s Nest Stadium @ Beijing will be 1/50th of the real Bird’s Nest Stadium. (Not the scale shown here). Pictures by Johor Bahru.

The Lego Beijing Water Cube Swim Centre will be 1/50th of the Real Water Cube.

EXERCISE 1:

Now mathspiggies over to you. The first thing to do is calculate the Lego Olympic measurements (table below).

………………………………………………………..

EXERCISE 2:

Then mark out a Lego Olympics 100m sprint to scale and/or

draw a Lego Olympic track (in chalk, perhaps) and/or

step out a Lego Olympic marathon track and/or

make a pole vault pole to scale for your little Lego Man.

Or bring in a Lego Man/Girl/Pirate and step out the Marathon Track (840m to scale).

This little guy has to run 840 m!!!!! Wow!

Zombie Maths 13: Volume

How to Survive Zombie Attack

.

.

How much will it cost to fill a bath tub with FAKE BLOOD?

Typical volume of water in a

bath tub = 50 US gallons = 189.5 litres

…………………………..

Use the cheapest available fake blood products above. To be accurate we should work out the price of Fake Blood per litre or gallon for every product, but we will ‘Buy in bulk, mathpiggies!’  The cost would be:

Halloween Blood Bath = $ 29.99 per gallon x 50

………………………………= $1499.50

………Stage Blood Bath =  $ 49.79 per litre x 189.5

………………………………= $ 9435.21

……..Movie Blood Bath = $ 129.99  per gallon x 50

……………………………..= $ 6499.50

It costs heaps more to have a STAGE BLOOD BATH and you’d have to do it every night of your ZOMBIE show.

Maths Girls a Go Go II

September 8, 2011

Vi Hart ( pic below) calls herself a mathemusician. She graduated  with a degree in music from Stony Brook University, NY, two year ago, but has always maintained an interest in maths. Last November she posted Doodling in Maths Class on You Tube, which as the New York Times explained ‘ married a distaste for the way math is taught in school with an exuberant exploration of math as art’. It went viral. Her youtube videos have collected over 1 million hits already.

.

The question for maths teachers is this:

Why didn’t Vi study MATHS at uni when she:

* is smart

* loves maths

* is mathematically creative

Was she booooooooored by high school maths?

Vi’s videos should be a must see for all maths teachers. They are fun and they encourage girls to take on the maths challenge.

Vi Hart: Infinity Elephants

Fun Jnr Maths Exercise in Fractals

.

Vi Hart: Binary Trees

Fun Introduction to Exponential Functions

You will find more videos @ Vi Hart Website.

GaGa Graphs

July 12, 2011

Today’s subject, mathspigs, is hairy.

.

Yes! WE are looking at hair graphs.

.

Some hair graphs are based on science, measuring and plotting.

.

This is a real graph involving real maths. It is a plot of hair regrowth VS time graph using a hair growth agent. There are scientists out there somewhere actually counting hairs per sq cm.

More info @ NHS CHOICES website.

.

Some graphs are FUNNY but FAKE

.

… MADE UP

… DODGY

… GAGA

.

These graphs use fake maths and fake numbers.

So mathspigs, watch out for the gaga graphs. They’re everywhere.

Here is a FAKE HAIR GRAPH. The hair is real. The graph is fake.

This chart can be found @ SMOSH.

In fairness to EMOs everywhere,

Mathspig thinks we need a few more

pie charts for other HAIR GROUPS.

Here is Mathspig’s Fake Graph :

DANGERS of HEADBANGER HAIR

57 % Suffer severe hair whiplash injury to groin.

19% Can belch the National Anthem.

17% Don’t realise they are dating their brother.

7%  Suffer Obsessive Compulsive Air Guitar Addiction.

You can make your own funny pie chart @ Free Graphs

Don’t forget it’s a jungle of hair out there and sometimes hair can be dangerous.

Here is an YouTube animation called The Danger of Hair
