This is a rework of a previous post with full calcs.
Every volcano disaster movie from Volcano (1997) with Tommy Lee Jones to Dante’s Peak (1997) with Pierce Brosnan someone somewhere tries to out run a lava flow. Is this possible?
The answer is maybe. You will find everything you want to know about lava flows here.
On January 10,1977, at Nyiragongo lava sprang from the sides of the volcano moving at speeds up to 40 miles per hour. About 70 people were killed.
Measuring the temperature of lava. Photograph by R.L. Christiansen, U.S. Geological Survey, January 9, 1973.
The fastest Lava flows recorded were in Hawaiiin 1950 when Mauna Loa erupted. The lava traveled at 6 miles per hour through thick forest. But once the lava flows became established and good channels developed, the lava in the channels was flowing at up to 60 mph.
Speed of average sprinter = 10 – 15 mph
Can you out run a lava flow?

You would be scorched in 33 seconds!!!

Hello My Mathematical Friends,

Official Seal of MATHSPIG
The President of the
United States of Mathematics
The Gettysburg Address, Martin Luther King’s ‘I have a dream’ Speech and Winston Churchill’s ‘We shall fight on the beaches … we shall fight in the fields and in the streets … we shall never surrender’ speech were speeches that inspired millions in difficult times.
Maths needs an inspiring speech.
Why?
Because today too many kids do maths like this:
They sit in front of a computer. They answer questions on a program as if they’re shooting at a target. They don’t care about the maths. They just want to know their score. All very entertaining … but they’re not working their brains. They do not think.
Many do not know their tables even in Year 7.
Maths has turned into a guessing game. And they struggle with it.
But there is a serious side.
Maths needs an inspiring speech. So listen up Middle School students. Here it is:

Take Care

Hellooooooooo My Little Butterflies,
Even if, like Muhammad Ali, you can move like a butterfly and sting like a bee, evidence shows that being hit in the head can cause brain damage and/or kill you. (Ban boxing – it’s demeaning and dangerous, New Scientist, 12 Aug, 2013)
Don’t get into a fight about this issue. Just do the maths. It’s a no brainer!
Toodles

Hello Sweet Peas,
This week we are busting Maths Myths. There are many Urban Myths involving maths.
Myths involving maths work because the number sounds sort of right.
eg. Drink 8 glasses of water a day.
Drink 64 fl oz or 1.89 litres of water a day does NOT sound quite right, yet this is the same volume of water!!
Here is an Urban Myth involving maths from Mythbusters.
In 2009 (Episode 117) Grant, Tory, and Kari investigated the Myth that a giant 2m (7 ft) Lego ball rolling down a hill could smash a car.
They borrowed 1 million blocks and with all hands on deck built a 1,400 kg (3,000 pound) ball.
Did it smash the car?Nah! It fell to bits first.
Myth Busted.

But you can turn yourself into a Little Lego Character here.
There is a fabulous exercise for middle school maths with worksheets on how rumours spread @ 6 degrees of separation.
Now on with the Maths Myth Busting

According to How Stuff Works

Pediatric gastroenterologist David Milov told the magazine Scientific American that he can say “with complete certainty” that gum does not stay in you for seven years.
You will find more than you ever wanted to know about the structure of chewing gum (It’s a rubber-based substance though now mostly synthetic) and it’s digestion at the above website and here.

Sometimes, it feels like chewing gum will stay on your shoe for 7 years!!
Chewing Gum Stays in your stomach for 7 years Myth BUSTED.

Can’t those scientists count?
…….
…….
.………
According to Shamini Bundell on Null Hypothesis
..
.
..
….Various experts have tried counting the muscles involved. Mainly they argue over how to define a smile and a frown and come up with different answers.
Either way most of the numbers quoted at you by irritatingly cheerful people are entirely made up.
As Shamini noted “It takes 37 muscles to frown and 22 to smile, but it only takes 4 to reach out and punch someone in the face.”
43 muscles to smile myth and nose busted.
