1. Hokey Pokey Algorithm

November 25, 2015

1a Mathspig Hokey pokey
Here’s the Hokey Pokey:

You put your right foot in
You take your right foot out
You put your right foot in
And you shake it all about
You do the hokey pokey
And you turn yourself around
That’s what it’s all about!

1b. Hokey Pokey

Why are algorithms as easy as the Hokey Pokey?

Because the Hokey Pokey is an algorithm or a set of steps that have to be taken to complete a task (see below) and the task is having fun and/or being really embarrassed by your parents in public. Whatever!

2. Algorithm 1
3. Algorithm 2
For more information about algorithms go to the Khan Academy here.

READABILITY ALGORITHM
We are going to look at texts including a maths test to check their readability. Here are just a few songs with their age and Grade readability scores:
Hokey Pokey (above) = Grade 3 = 9 yo
Frosty the Snowman = Grade 5 = 11 yo
Hello by Adele = Grade 5 = 11 yo
Wildest Dream = Taylor Swift = Grade 3 = 9 yo
Russians* Sting = Grade 6 = 12 yo
* Most complicated lyrics I know. Any other suggestions?

Maths Cure for Wolverine

July 25, 2013

Jackie from Straight Ace Learning ( Maths & Movies ) asked Mathspig to come up with a formula for Wolverines super fast super healing powers. He can regenerate or heal in 5 seconds. In the latest Wolverine Movie he becomes mortal ….

Wolverine Facts:

No. Cells in a human/X-man Body

= 75 trillion cells  = 75 x 1012

(Mid-point of 60-90 trillion cells cited on the fab AskaBiologist website)

Imagine Wolverine is slashed/shot/wounded in the abdomen.

Human Trunk

= 44% of the body.

(See Body Segment Data here)

Estimate Cell Damage

= 1/4 of trunk = 44/4 = 11% = 0.11

Number Cells Damaged

= 75 x 1012 x 0.11 = 8.25 x 1012

You will need your Web 2 Scientific Calculator (See diag below).

W 2

W 3

This is what the calculation looks like on the WEB 2 Scientific Calculator.

Trick 4: Madame Mathematique Clairvoyant

November 30, 2012

…………………………………………..

Madame Mathematique Clairvoyant

Requirements: Spooky music and spooky look.

You will find some spooky music here.

Ask a student to write down two 5-digit numbers. You rapidly write a 5-digit number underneath.

Ask another student to write another 5-digit number. You write another 5-digit number quickly.

Stand back.

And instantly write the answer.

Example:

N1 = 97413

N2 = 28619

N3 = 71380  (Each digit in N3 must add up to 9 with digits above)

N4 = 64231

N5 = 35768  (Each digit in N5 must add up to 9 with digits above)

Now you will instantly write down the sum of these five numbers as

297411

Da! DA!

The trick is to subtract 2 from N1 and put it in front:

N1 = 97413

N1 -2 = 97411

Sum of 5 numbers = 297411

Hint: Get as many students to add up the five 5-digit numbers on a calculator. You will beat them, but you will also need many answers as a number of students will key incorrect numbers.

Spooky Maths Magic

Requirements; Smart board/data projector.

This is mental maths, but not hard maths. You can play this video by Marco Frezza  directly to the class.

It may not work on everybody, but it would be very interesting to see how many students are fooled by this spooky magic man.

Lego Olympics Triathlon

February 23, 2012

This is the Lego Triathlon.

And, mathspiggies, your Lego Man/girl/alien has made it into the finals.

…………………………………………..

EQUIPMENT: Your Lego Man, girl, alien, your brain, a calculator & one dice.

…………………………………………………………………

In the Olympic Triathlon contestants:

…………………………………………………………..

.

.

Swim 1.5 km = 1,500 m

Cycle 40 km = 40,000 m

Run 10 km = 10, 000 m

.

.

.

.

In a Lego Olympic Triathlon little Lego men, girls, aliens have to:

.

Swim 1,500/50 = 30m

Cycle 40,000/50 = 800m

Run  10,000/50 = 200m

But each contestant will be better at some section than another.

Your Lego man, girl, alien replaces one of the following contestants. Transfer their number and times to your column.

Now calculate the Total Times for each contestant.

THEN roll the dice.

3. Disqualified because your coach gave you an alien Smoosnot drink with banned drugs by mistake.

5. Disqualified because a Groppanator from the Urgastor Galaxy ran out of the crowd just before the finish line and hugged you with his 6 arms.
